\nBikes have been around for over 200 years. Karl von Drais of Germany patented the velocipede in 1818. It had no peddles. The rider sat on the frame and moved by kicking the ground.
\nPedals were added to a large front wheel in 1864. The \u201cordinaries\u201d were very hard to ride with a front wheel up to 64 inches.
\nA geared central pedal designed in 1885 created a safe, easy bicycle. U.S. sales took off.
\nBicycling is still a popular mode of travel and recreation. So hats off … or helmets on … to bicycle safety!<\/p>\n
